INTRUDER?

When I was about 15 years old, I started reading "Helter Skelter", a book about the Charles Manson murders. I'm sure many of you have seen the movie as i have but the book is much more desciptive and really gives you the chills. This was especially true for me, because most of the time I would read this book when I was home alone. I guess it wasn't the best choice of a book to read while you are alone in your house, but I thought I could handle it. The thought that a man could hide in a kitchen cabinet as Charles Manson did when the Police searched Spawn Ranch really gave me the creeps. I never looked at kitchen cabinets the same way again.

My Mom and Step-Dad use to go out to dinner a good bit and I didn't have any siblings, so i would be home alone whenever they went out to dinner. I would usually just watch TV, but I had begun reading "Helter Skelter" during the time that this incident happened. Maybe reading this book made me overly aware of any noises, who knows.

On this particular night though, I was not reading "Helter Skelter". It had creeped me out so much, i decided to stop reading it when i was home alone. On this night, I was just sitting in our den watching TV, while my parents were out eating dinner. I would always make double sure all the doors were locked and I would always be hyper-aware of anything that seemed out of place.

Our kitchen area and Den area were all open to each other in an open kind of floor plan. There was a door in the kitchen that led downstairs to the basement. Once you went downstairs to the basement, there were two doors that led outside. One led to the backyard and the other led to the carport on the side of the house. Both doors had a screen door outside of the main door. The screen door on the one that led to the backyard was made of wood, but the screen door on the door that led to the carport was a metal screen door. If the carport door was open, the metal screen door would make a loud slam noise as you went in and out of the screen door. If the carport door was closed, then the metal screen door would not make that slamming noise, because the main door would be closed and there was too much air pressure between the two doors. It would just make the metal door close softly, but if the main door was open, it would slam loudly with that metal kind of sound. If you were in the house, you could always here someone coming in that door through the carport, because of that slamming sound. That's how i would always know when my Mom came back from the store or someone came back home.

On this particular night, I was just sitting in the den watching TV. It was a pretty quiet night. My parents were out to dinner and i was just enjoying the time alone. It was still early in the evening and my parents had only been gone about an hour.

All of a sudden, I heard that metal screen door slam, except it was louder than normal. It sounded almost like someone had forced it slammed shut. It was so loud, it immediately got my attention and startled me. I knew immediately that if the main door had been shut, then there was no way that metal screen door would have slammed like that, so hearing it slam told me that the main door to the carport had to be open.

The door in the kitchen that led downstairs to the basement also had a lock on it. When I heard this loud slam, I immediately jumped out of my chair and glanced over at the kitchen door and saw that it was locked. I had no doubt in my mind that someone was breaking into the house through the carport, because that slamming noise meant that the carport main door had to be open. I know it was not left open so somebody had broken into the basement.

I was so sure that someone was breaking into the house, i didn't even hestitate, I picked up the phone and called the police. As I am on the phone, I can see the kitchen door, so i am watching the door handle like a hawk as i speak to the Police. If I see that handle turn, I am bolting out the front door of the house and hiding until the police arrive. I told the Police someone was breaking into the house and to please hurry. The Police asked if i could see anybody or how i knew they were breaking in and I told them that i heard them slam a screen door to the basement and it was clear as a bell. This screen door would slam automatically once you went through it.

As soon as I got off the phone with the Police, I went and waited by the front door. If I heard any noise coming from that kitchen door, i was outta there! The Police were there really fast and when I saw the Police car pull up in our driveway, I went out the front door to meet them in the yard. The officer asked me what happened and i explained the whole scenario to him. He told me to wait there in the front yard and he started walking over to the carport with his gun drawn. He was gone only a couple of minutes and then he came back and said, "Everything is locked up tight and i don't see any signs of a break-in". I was shocked. I asked him about the carport door and he said it was locked. I just couldn't believe it. I know what I heard.

I asked the officer to stay for a minute as i walked to the carport to check it out. The screen door itself was locked. It was impossible that the screen door could have slammed even if someone had done it with the main door being locked, because usually we left the screen door unlocked and would just lock the main door. This time, the screen door was locked also. I was really perplexed. I just could not figure out how i heard that metal door slam when it was locked. It just made no sense.

I apologized to the officer for taking up his time and i was slightly embarrassed and kind of felt stupid. I could not stop thinking about it because when I heard that door slam, it was so loud. I knew what that sound was immediately. I had no question in my mind what that sound was and so much that i immediately called the Police. It was so loud that i heard it over the TV.

I still today am positive I heard that metal door slam. I don't know how it happened but i was clear on what I heard that night. I know logically that there is no way the screen door could have slammed since it was locked and the main door was closed and i know common sense would tell you that you heard something else and mistook it for that screen door. I know all of this but I still know i heard that exact sound of the screen door slamming that i had heard so many times before. I knew that sound very well and i couldn't think of any other sound that could have happened that would have sounded just like that door slamming.

So, maybe I am mistaken but I am so sure, even today, that I heard that screen door slam that this is one of those incidents that i just can't explain. I have had many other things happen in my life that I am willing to say could have easily been something else, so I dismiss those incidents but this one has always stuck with me as being something that really did happen and there was no explanation for it.

I guess i will never know.
