GHOST SLAMS

The Summer between my Freshman and Sophomore years in College, I went down to South Alabama to visit some friends in College. It was the Summer of 1986 and we were all sitting in a dorm room trying to decide what to do for fun. One of the girls in our group said she knew of an abandoned office building that was said to be haunted, so we decided that sounded like fun. Let's go ghost hunting.

There was a group of about 5 of us that went and this girl was the only one that knew how to get there. We drove for a good while and i couldn't even begin to tell you where we were. It was around midnight and we waited til late so that we wouldn't get caught by the Police poking around in an abandoned building.

We finally reached the destination of this abandoned office building and when I first saw it, I thought there was no way this place was haunted. It didn't look that old for one thing and it was a fairly modern brick office building that had a lobby and 3 floors above the lobby. It just didn't look like a place that you would think was haunted.

It was easy to get in and we walked around the lobby area first. There were lots of old boxes with office papers in them. We started looking through all the papers and they were just typical office memos and letters written on letterhead. Nothing really interesting. It was odd how these boxes were left behind. If the office moved or whatever happened, surely they would have picked up all their stuff. Even though this was odd, I was convinced this place couldn't be haunted.

As we were all exploring the lobby area, we heard a door slam on one of the floors above us. We couldn't determine which floor it came from, but it was a clear loud door slam. It kind of echoed through the empty building. It was so loud, it startled all of us.

Our first thought was that someone else was in the building. There was no power in the building and it was dark as night inside. We had to use flashlights to navigate around. It was so easy for us to get in, so maybe some homeless person was living here. Why would he slam a door?

After hearing the door slam, all 5 of us started going up the stairs to the first floor. On each end of the building there was a stairwell connecting the floors and there was an elevator but it was not working without power. We get to the first floor and it was a typical office building. Door after door of offices. The doors were those big heavy thick wood doors that you see in a lot of office buildings. The door frames were metal, so you could see how these doors would make a loud slamming noise if shut hard.

We went to every door and walked into every office and couldn't find anything or anyone. Some doors were actually locked and we couldn't get into the office but the majority of the office doors were open. Just as we were finishing scanning the first floor, we heard another loud door slam that sounded like it came from the floor above us, so we ran to the stairwell and went up to the 2nd floor.

We quickly checked every office and didn't find anything. Then, another door slam came from the last remaining 3rd floor above us. When we were on the first floor and we heard the door slam, it could have come from the 3rd floor and not the 2nd floor. Now, we heard a door slam above us and there is only one more floor, so we felt confident that whoever was slamming doors, we would find them on the 3rd floor. Just to make sure that someone didn't slip by us, we split up and 3 of us went up the stairs on one end of the building and the other two of us went up the stairs on the other end of the building. This way, nobody could slip past us going down.

We ran up the stairs to the 3rd floor. We started checking all the offices on our end and the other group started on the other end of the 3rd floor and we would meet in the middle. We did this and found absolutely nothing. There was nobody in this building. We were getting a little freaked out and were discussing how this could happen when we heard another door slam on what sounded like the 2nd floor below us, so we rushed down to the 2nd floor.

Before we can even start checking offices on the 2nd floor, another door slams back on the 3rd floor, where we just came from. Now, how can this happen? If this was a person, there is no way they could have avoided us on the stairs and they couldn't have been that quick. We all split up again and ran back up to the 3rd floor.

We started checking every office again and got about half way done when another door slammed on what sounded like the 1st floor. At this point we are just confused. There is no way a person could have pulled this off. We decided to finish checking the 3rd floor and then we were just going to leave. We even checked the doors themselves to see if wind could have caused this but there was just no way. These heavy doors took some effort to slam them that hard. It took physical force to make them slam like that. We finshed checking the offices and found nothing, so we started back down the stairs to leave the building.

When we get back down to the lobby, one last door slammed on one of the above floors again. We were all creeped out and just ran out of the building. Something was playing games with us and i honestly don't have an explanation for it, other than it had to be a spirit of some sort that wanted to have some fun at our expense.

Maybe that's why all the boxes were left. Maybe somebody got freaked out and just said to hell with the boxes.
